Clear Vision, Closer Care: Expanding Eye Health Outreach in Rural Rwanda

Expanding Our Team to Strengthen Primay Eye Care Outreach in Rural Rwanda

At Bienfait Rwanda, we are continuing to grow – not just as an organization, but in our ability to reach people where access to healthcare remains limited. As part of this effort, we have expanded our team to intensify Primary Eye Care (PEC) outreach in rural areas of Rwanda.

Across many communities, eye conditions often remain untreated until they become severe. The reasons are well known: long distances to services, limited specialized staff and low awareness of early symptoms. Yet many of these conditions are preventable or treatable if detected in time. This is why strengthening Primary Eye Care at the community level is essential.

Over the past months, Bienfait Rwanda has trained Primary Eye Care Nurses (PECs) at Karongi and Rutsiro District and expanded collaboration with Ophthalmic Clinical Officers (OCOs). Together, our growing team is now actively working with rural health centers through structured outreach visits. Their role is not only to provide basic eye examinations and initial treatment, but also to support local healthcare staff, improve early detection and establish effective referral systems for more complex cases.

This outreach model strengthens early diagnosis and prevention by embedding eye care directly within local health services. Rather than relying on late-stage, facility-based treatment, patients are screened closer to home – allowing eye conditions to be identified at an earlier, more manageable stage. Integrating services into health centers improves continuity of care, reduces delays, and lowers barriers to access. This enables individuals to seek care proactively, reducing the risk of complications and avoidable vision loss while shifting the focus from treatment to prevention.

Our team expansion is a strategic step toward building a more inclusive and sustainable eye health system. By investing in local capacity and strengthening Primary Eye Care, we are creating long-term impact that goes beyond individual interventions.

Our commitment remains clear: to ensure that access to quality eye care does not depend on location – and that preventable vision loss becomes a thing of the past. Because a clear vision changes more than sight – it changes possibilities.
